Recipe to success: why becoming an overnight success usually takes years

How often have you thought about a successful person or business, and imagined fast-tracking your own to fame and fortune? Sounds easy, right? Well, the truth is, becoming an overnight sensation can happen, but the reality is, developing a successful business takes time, as proven by Carmen’s founder, Carolyn Creswell.

Her venture began in 1992 as an 18-year-old university student working part-time at a muesli business, that was for sale. The natural-born entrepreneur saw an opportunity and purchased the business for a cool $1,000. It wasn’t until years later, the range of healthy muesli made it onto the shelves of leading supermarkets around the globe.


Like most successful companies, you rarely hear about the years of hard work, multiple challenges, and stress behind the scenes, leaving us with the impression that a business can go from zero to six figures quickly. Today, Carmen’s is a hugely profitable enterprise, yet it didn’t happen overnight.

The company has had its fair share of struggles. In the early days, for example, without warning their entire product range was pulled from a major supermarket. Rather than be defeated by this significant setback, the team recognised the need to improve their product and it wasn’t until 18 months later that the brand was reinstated onto shelves.

It’s easy to see how the notion of overnight success can be glamourised, but once you start to do your own research, you will find that achieving the highs in business only come from hard work, persistence and lessons learned along the way. Carmen’s remains a strong enterprise and their philosophies in business have cemented their foundations for longevity and success.
