4 tips to build strong team spirit in the workplace
Updated: Dec 10, 2018
The benefits of creating strong team spirit in the office are undeniable – improving morale and having an enjoyable and balanced environment for staff are just some of them. And, there are advantages for businesses too – from improving employee retention to boosting productivity and efficiency in the workplace.
Here are four tips we’ve adopted at Appco Australia to encourage teamwork.
Communication is the key to success
Keeping communication lines open between team members and managers is a good way to encourage idea sharing, build relationships and develop teamwork. This is something we know a thing or two about – conversations are at the heart of our business.
We hold regular breakfast meetings with our staff and senior management teams to encourage open communication. It’s a great way to get to know each other better, discuss what’s happening in our business, define our goals and provide an opportunity for staff to ask questions or give feedback.
Collaborate with your team
We recognise that there are times when working alone can be beneficial, but for the majority of the work we do, we need to have a team of experts with a broad range of skills, to create and deliver our clients’ campaigns.
Working as a cross-functional team means that each person brings something different to the table. It’s also a chance to recognise the talents of each individual and give them an opportunity to shine – when our staff are proud of what they do, it shows in the work they deliver.
Recognise extra effort
Recognising the efforts of employees who have gone the extra mile not only makes them feel appreciated for their work, it also encourages everyone at Appco Australia HQ to do the best job possible – perfect for creating strong team spirit.
Each quarter, through our employee recognition program, staff members are nominated by their peers for various awards including innovation, leadership, substantial contribution, and teamwork. The quarterly award winners are recognised at a special team meeting.
Bring people together socially
Organised social and business events are both great ways to bring staff and senior managers together. They not only help boost morale and motivation, they are a great way to learn more about the people you work with, which improves employee engagement and helps break the ice for new employees.
Appco Australia’s social committee hosts regular events for staff and our senior managers. You only have to look at our Facebook page to see the types of events we’ve hosted (five-minute afternoon ice-cream breaks are always a winner). Formal meetings are, of course, essential but we also encourage casual catch-ups to give people a chance to take some timeout, have a chat and get to know their team mates.
There are a lot of elements to the services we provide for our clients and we couldn’t deliver them without working together and bringing lots of different skills to the table. Plus, it just creates a better working environment when we operate as a team. Our advice in a nutshell? Spend time ensuring your communication lines are open, collaborate and maximise people’s unique skills, recognise staff who put in extra effort and hold regular events to bring people together outside of work.
