Appco in Focus: Meet Annette, Appco Australia’s Communication Manager
Updated: Dec 10, 2018
Keeping up with Appco Australia is no small task, and Annette is the person making sure everyone can do just that. She’s the woman behind the news and blogs on the website and posts on Facebook and LinkedIn, and we decided to find out a bit more about her.
How do you get ready for a day at work?
I’m a morning person and get up super early. I need to burn off my energy in the morning or I get fidgety.
Here’s my morning routine:
4:40am – rise and shine
5am – head to the gym
6:20am – get child ready for school, and myself ready for work
8am – school drop off
8:15am – commute to the office
How did you get into comms?
I got interested in public relations while working in local government. I wanted to make a career change and working closely with the media department inspired me to do a communications degree.
Your job requires a lot of writing – how do you stay focussed in a busy office?
Music! The office is really loud at times (in a good way), so sometimes I need to block all of conversation and general busyness out. I’m much more productive when I have my headphones plugged in.
What’s your go-to work-day lunch?
I’m a bit of a health freak and love a good salad or a soup.
What is great about social media?
I love social media. It means I can arrange my social life easily and express my opinions about what’s going on in the media. It’s instant and it’s informative.
I also appreciate the power it has in business. The platforms are an opportunity for businesses to reach targeted audiences with a unique message and have two-way communication with customers.
Who do you follow and who should we follow?
I have a lot of faves on social media, but here are a few:
Time Out Sydney (keeps me in the know)
Rhys Darby (look him up, he’s a Kiwi and he’s very funny)
Daenerys Targaryen – (I love Game of Thrones, and this page will fill the void until next season)
On Instagram, I follow some healthy lifestyle pages including healthyeating_jo and danalandgren (great inspiration for eating healthy and keeping fit)
How do you switch off after work?
Cooking and a glass of red wine, but it’s pretty hard for me to totally switch off. I like to use downtime to think of content ideas, that’s when I’m most creative.
How are you using your annual leave this year?
I’m heading to Queenstown with a bunch of friends and my partner to go mountain biking, zip-lining and I might attempt the canyon swing ... If I’m brave enough.
If you had to be locked in a building overnight, which would it be?
Ha ha this question is good … It has to be a luxury cinema – there must be reclining lounge chairs and unlimited wine, popcorn and chocolate.
What's something about you that people would be surprised to learn?
I was raised in the country and am a skilled shooter – I haven’t done this for years, but it surprises people in a big way when I tell them. I also had a pet kangaroo when I was a child – his name was Joey.
