Appco in Focus: From school teacher to business guru – our employee Greig Ward shares his story
Officially, Greig Ward is Appco Australia’s Learning and Development Manager, but he’s better known around the office as the ‘go-to guy’ when we need to enhance our business knowledge. You see, Greig acquired some of his skills and wisdom in business from a past profession as a high school teacher. Here, we get to know him better and understand how his job positively impacts the work we do for our clients’ brands.
In a nut-shell, describe your role at Appco Australia.
I help others to learn and develop in their professional life. I design and create learning resources and facilitate programs for Appco Australia’s staff and management team. Some of the most requested subjects include communication, leadership, management and coaching.
Another part of my role is to deliver product training to the sub-contracted marketing companies that deliver face-to-face marketing services. This ensures that together with the sub-contracted marketing companies, we deliver a responsible and valuable service which benefits our clients’ brands.
What is the best part about your job?
The people! Everyone is just so enthusiastic and willing to learn which makes my job so much more enjoyable.
How do you get ready for a day at work?
I like to wake up early and go for a run or walk with Gary, my three-year-old Kelpie, followed by a good breakfast and morning news.
Learning never stops regardless of your experience. How do you continue to develop?
I follow a broad and diverse range of thought leaders online and enjoy reading about disruption and innovation in different industries.
What was an early job that taught you something important or useful?
For over 17 years, I was a physical education and geography high school teacher. I think teaching young people has helped me to develop empathy, patience and people management – all relevant skills in my current job.
What’s one thing you can’t live without?
My running gear because I like to run a few times a week – it keeps me fit and happy!
If you could choose anyone to have dinner with, who would you pick?
Sir David Attenborough because his passion and enthusiasm for the planet motivated me to study biology and geography.
