Wallabies’ win: a lesson in tenacity
Appco Group Australia’s Communications Manager Kelly Maguire watched Australia’s quarter finals win over Scotland in the Rugby World Cup overnight, and relates the iconic win to maintaining conviction as a team.
In a tight Rugby World Cup quarter-final upset, the Wallabies managed to only just break away from the Scots to win 35-34.
Winning by a single point means that if one minute thing had changed – if the Aussies had let their guard drop for even a minute – Scotland could have scored a try or penalty, and there would have been no green and gold come the semi finals next week.
Australia were always the slim favourites to win the match, however as they trailed at half time, it was clear that their persistence and resolve would be the make or break of their Rugby World Cup aspirations.
After a controversial sin-binning of Scottish winger Sean Maitland, the stars aligned for the resolute Aussie team to buckle down. Flyhalf Bernard Foley put in a penalty kick to keep Australia’s World Cup dream alive in the dying minute of their quarter-final bid.
The 34 points scored by Scotland are the most they have ever scored against Australia in the teams’ 88-year history, and it could have easily been anyone’s match, at any point in the game.
Even if you’re not a fan of rugby union, the win is a testament to how powerful working as a team truly can be. The philosophy of never bending to defeat is applicable across so many facets of life, arguably none more than sales, where attitude is just as crucial as it is on the footy field.
Most of all, no matter who would have won the nailbiting match between Scotland and Australia, the evenly matched sides teach us that if you back yourself and trust in those around you, great things can be achieved.
And sometimes, you don’t need to win by much.
