BLOG: 3 reasons why mindfulness works in business
Arianna Huffington, Jeff Weiner, Rupert Murdoch, Oprah Winfrey, and Bill Gates are all super-successful entrepreneurs and they also have something else in common – they practice mindfulness every day. Mindfulness is gaining huge popularity in the business world, but not everyone is up to speed on its immense benefits. Basically, mindfulness is all about paying attention and being aware of your experiences in the present moment – and there’s a growing body of scientific research that suggests practising this habit daily can improve your well-being and enhance success. Here are three reasons why mindfulness works in business.
1. It changes the way you handle stress
Mindfulness isn’t a new thing – it’s been around for ages (literally) and now science is proving that people who practice this age-old art are more likely to cope better with stress. Business professionals are busy people, and sometimes things can get a little hectic – but don’t stress – mindfulness reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, improving clarity and logic so you can make better decisions in the workplace.
2. Boosts creativity and productivity
People who implement mindfulness each day are more creative and can process information faster – and it’s been proven by science! We know this might make us sound a little geeky, but scientists believe that gyrification, which is “the folding” of the cerebral cortex as a result of growth is responsible for improving the way our brains process information, make decisions, form memories and improve attention! These are critical skills in the workplace and can help you be more productive and think outside of the box.
3. Improves emotional intelligence
According to the experts, people who practice mindfulness cultivate more positive emotions. In other words, they tend to have a stronger sense of empathy and compassion which is linked to high emotional intelligence (EQ) – this forms the foundations for other skills business professionals use daily. At Appco Australia, we’re a people-focused business and value the positive influences EQ has on our staff and our company. We offer our employees EQ workshops to help them develop this skill.
Although people have been practising mindfulness for a long time, the business world is only now seeing the wonderful benefits it brings to the workplace. If you’re looking to reduce your stress levels, boost creativity and productivity and improve your emotional skills, consider making some time to be more mindful.
