Not only does our Business Development Manager Pauline Henderson have an immense amount of business knowledge and experience, wait for it…she’s met The Queen and Prince Philip! Read on to get the scoop and learn about Pauline’s role and why it’s integral to our clients’ direct marketing campaigns.
In a nut-shell, describe your role at Appco Australia.
It’s my job to find new commercial clients. I spend a lot of my time talking to prospects, understanding their businesses and if face-to-face marketing is a viable option for them. Another aspect of my role is project managing test campaigns with our clients’ brands. We do this to establish where their brand is positioned in the market and to assess if there’s potential to continue a long-term campaign.
How do you think your clients would describe you and your working relationship with them?
Ha ha, this is a tough question! I have developed some strong professional relationships with my clients. I work closely with them, so they really do get to know me and my work style. I think they would say that I ask a lot of questions (this helps me understand their businesses), I’m straight to the point and I am open and honest.
You’ve been with Appco Australia for 15 years. How do you continue to learn and develop?
I ask a lot of questions and I learn from others around me. Early in my career I remember asking a manager if I could shadow them to a client meeting as I wanted to improve my negotiation skills – this approach has helped me to progress throughout my career and in my role today.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever taken?
Always be prepared for the next step in your career – have the tools in the bag so when an opportunity arises you have the skills to do the job.
You’ve had a few roles over the years at Appco Australia – which has been your favourite and why?
I started at Appco Australia as a business support officer delivering client product training to the marketing companies we sub-contracted and the independent contractors they provided. I really loved this role because I enjoyed teaching and seeing others thrive when given the right knowledge.
What’s a typical day like in your role?
There is no such thing! Every day is so different. One day I might be presenting to a client or preparing a business proposal, the next day I might be delivering promotional material for a clients’ test campaign.
What was an early job that taught you something important or useful?
My family owned a bed and breakfast in Scotland. I started working at the hotel from a young age and learnt about hard work and what it means to be customer facing. I rolled up my sleeves and was proactive in getting things done without waiting to be asked.
What’s the best part about your job?
It has to be the variety of tasks and the fact that I am always learning about the different industries we work across. I feel like I know so much about so many sectors – I have worked with clients from banking, energy, telecommunications, insurance, dentistry, food delivery and more.
Have you ever met anyone famous?
Yes, I have. I was in my final year at college in Scotland circa 1994 and was selected with two other students to represent our school at The Royal Garden Party for the Commonwealth. We wore our uniforms which stood out from the crowd. The Queen and Prince Philip approached us, shook our hands and asked us about our school – we were so chuffed!

It’s with good reason that Melbourne Cup Day is known as ‘the race that stops the nation’. For 156 years, this world-famous event has captured Aussies’ attention, wherever they are, for a few minutes on the first Tuesday of November to witness the winning horse cross the finish line.
